Television chef Hugh Fernlay-Whittingstall had his show ‘Hugh’s Chicken Run’ broadcast earlier this year, informing horrified viewers what the life of a broiler chicken is really like. His show encouraged people to buy free-range eggs instead, and sales have risen by more than 50% in this last year. The chef has taken his campaign a step further by buying shares in Tesco in order to set forth a resolution to improve the quality of life and the welfare of the chickens.
Hugh Fernlay-Whittingstall has jumped hurdles in order to get his proposal through to Tesco’s. He was asked to fund the distribution costs of his resolution by himself do that the 269,000 shareholders in the company could read the details. With only a short while to get the funds together, the television chef donated £30,000 himself and raised the rest of the money through various auctions and services provided through Compassion in World Farming. The compassionate chef succeeded in raising the money, as well as the support of over 100 of Tesco’s shareholders and is continuing to fight for the welfare of broiler chickens.
